Are you united with anyone? What does it mean to be in unity? Are there people we should be united with? Why should we be united? What does it mean to be united? Does true unity mean you think alike? Is it possible to be united with someone who has different values? Let me tell you what God has told me about how unity brings hope.
I have learned that unity is important. The first unity that comes to mind is the uniting of a man and a woman in marriage. This union is described as a picture of Christ and the Church. “This mystery is profound, and I am saying that it refers to Christ and the church.” Ephesians 5 32, (ESV) It is to be undefiled and pure. It is to make two, the man and the woman, one flesh. “Therefore a man shall leave his father and his mother and hold fast to his wife, and they shall become one flesh” Genesis 2:24 (ESV) In marriage I have also learned the importance of being married to someone with the same beliefs and ideas. I believe this is because if you are not united in those areas you will not be truly united. “Do not be unequally yoked with unbelievers. For what partnership has righteousness with lawlessness? Or what fellowship has light with darkness?” 2 Corinthians 6:14 (ESV)
I have learned that the Body of Christ, (the Church) must be united. Romans 12:4-5 describes this unity, “For as in one body we have many members, and the members do not all have the same function, so we, though many, are one body in Christ, and individually members one of another.” (ESV) Peter describes this unity in 1 Peter 3:8, “Finally, all of you, have unity of mind, sympathy, brotherly love, a tender heart, and a humble mind.” (ESV) Paul also tells us what this should look like in 1 Corinthians 1:10, “I appeal to you, brothers, by the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that all of you agree, and that there be no divisions among you, but that you be united in the same mind and the same judgment.” (ESV)
I have also learned about the unity between me and God. I find it in one of the most amazing verses in all of Scripture to me is John 17:23 not just because it is about unity, but it is because it has deep amazing consequences for me personally. When I meditate on it and contemplate what it really means I have many sensations. I have peace, joy, contentment and hope. You may ask me why it is because this verse to me talks about complete unity between me and God the Father Son and Holy Spirit because of my faith in Jesus. “I in them and you in me, that they may become perfectly one, so that the world may know that you sent me and loved them even as you loved me.” John 17:23 (ESV) Learn How to be united with God here.
I pray that you experience the unity with God like you have never experienced it before. Contemplate On Jesus’ description of true unity. It is because of God’s grace that you can have this amazing unity. “God shows his love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us” Romans 5:8 (ESV) It is this forgiveness that brings me hope and it is in granting others forgiveness we know for certain that we too are forgiven. The knowledge of being forgiven brings me hope. Remember though that all sin is forgivable except the sin of unbelieve in the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ on the cross satisfied the penalty for my sins and yours as well. It satisfied all my sins from the past, in the present, and in the future. My penalty and yours were satisfied on the cross by the death of Jesus, God’s greatest act of love and wrath, who became sin for me and you. It was also God’s greatest act of faithfulness because “God shows his love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.” Romans 5:8 (ESV) Because wisdom shows us, we need to believe in Jesus. I hope that you join me in helping others to choose Jesus.
