Have you ever been committed to something? Maybe it was a job. Maybe your favorite sports team. Maybe an organization. Maybe a political candidate. Have you ever been committed to a person? Maybe your mom or dad. Maybe your best friend. Maybe your children. Maybe your spouse. Have you ever made commitment to do something? Did you always do it? Have you ever made a commitment to God? Has God made a commitment to you? Let me tell you what God taught me about how commitment brings hope.
I have committed to many people in my life, and they have committed to me. I believe that this is the way God intended relationships to be. That is why we are commanded to love, pray, encourage, be kind, and so on to one another. In your spare time do a search in the Bible for the words “one another” and see what you find. I think you find is what I did that God wants us to be in relationship to one another and that we should be committed to one another
But that is not the most important commitment that God wants me to make. He wants me to “Commit your work to the Lord, and your plans will be established.” Proverbs 16:3 (ESV); “Commit your way to the Lord; trust in him, and he will act.” Psalms 37:5 See by committing my life to God he will establish my plans and will act upon my needs.
He also wants me to commit my soul to Him. He wants me to turn away from my bad and evil ways. “Repent therefore, and turn back, that your sins may be blotted out, that times of refreshing may come from the presence of the Lord, and that he may send the Christ appointed for you, Jesus, whom heaven must receive until the time for restoring all the things about which God spoke by the mouth of his holy prophets long ago.” Acts 3:19-21 (ESV) This is the promise of forgiveness from my sins and to you for the forgiveness of your sins.
To me however the most important commitment is not mine to God but rather it is His commitment to me. “Be strong and courageous. Do not fear or be in dread of them, for it is the Lord your God who goes with you. He will not leave you or forsake you.” Deuteronomy 31:36 (ESV) you may say that was said to Israel but because of my belief in Jesus and what He did for me I am now God’s child. “I will make my dwelling among them and walk among them, and I will be their God, and they shall be my people and I will be a father to you,
and you shall be sons and daughters to me, says the Lord Almighty.” 2 Corinthians 6:16,18. Also, God never changes So a promise He made to Israel is a promise to me as well.
I pray that you will join me in committing yourself and everything you have to God in return for His absolute commitment to you. In doing so you will find hope. We need to commit to God because of what Jesus did for us so that we might have eternal life. In doing so you will find the only true source of hope. Remember though that all sin is forgivable except the sin of unbelieve in the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ on the cross satisfied the penalty for my sins and yours as well. It satisfied all my sins from the past, in the present, and in the future. My penalty and yours were satisfied on the cross by the death of Jesus, God’s greatest act of love and wrath, who became sin for me and you. It was also God’s greatest act of faithfulness because “God shows his love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.” Romans 5:8 (ESV) Because wisdom shows us, we need to believe in Jesus. I hope that you join me in helping others to choose Jesus.
