Have you ever had a broken heart? I have. Have you had your broken heart healed? I have. How did you go about healing your broken heart? Did it happen over night or did it take a long time? Do you have a broken heart that has not been healed? Would you like to know how I had my broken heart healed? Let me tell you.
Over my life time I have had a broken heart several times. My guess is so have you. My heart was broken when the girl I really liked when I was twelve or thirteen moved to Sioux Falls South Dakota when her dad bought a shoe store there. At that age I had no idea how to maintain a relationship with my first love. My heart was broken. I pined for her for many years. The next time I had my heart broken was when my first wife decided she did not want to be married to me. She filed for divorce and my heart was broken. The next time was when the love of my wife decided to end her own life. My heart was fractured into pieces it was not only broken in two pieces it was shattered into pieces.
In each of those situations it took time to heal my broken heart. In the case of the first one it just took time. Even though I had not seen her for many years I still desired to see her even into college. I got over it when I got married, I thought but then I saw her several years into my first marriage when I was selling shoes to her dad. My heart leapt when I saw her, so, maybe my broken heart was not yet healed but nothing else came from the sighting which is good. Though even today I think of her with fondness. With my first wife it lasted for a couple of years though it was easier because I felt betrayed as well. The betrayal helped me to push her out of my life and my heart healed.
The broken heart caused by Laura’s suicide was much harder to heal. As I mentioned my hearts was shattered into many pieces. Time was not going to be the answer. It was the kind of brokenness that I was unable to heal by myself. I needed help so I turned to Jesus for help. In doing so I believe he put people in my life to encourage me, to stand beside me, to love me, to pray for me and most importantly to just be there for me. Jesus proclaims in Luke 4:18, “The Spirit of the LORD is upon Me, Because He has anointed Me To preach the gospel to the poor; He has sent Me to heal the brokenhearted, To proclaim liberty to the captives And recovery of sight to the blind, To set at liberty those who are oppressed;” (King James Version) The Psalmist also says it,
Praise the Lord!
For it is good to sing praises to our God;
for it is pleasant, and a song of praise is fitting.
The Lord builds up Jerusalem;
he gathers the outcasts of Israel.
He heals the brokenhearted
and binds up their wounds.
He determines the number of the stars;
he gives to all of them their names.
Great is our Lord, and abundant in power;
his understanding is beyond measure. Psalms 147:1-5 (ESV)
I found that the only way my broken (shattered) heart could be healed was by the grace of God. It is because of God’s grace that my broken heart has been healed. It was healed by God not just after Laura’s suicide but it was healed by Jesus every time. Though I hope never to have my heart broken again I know that Jesus will heal it if it happens again. It is because of that faith I have hope.
So, join me in having your broken heart healed if it has not already been healed. Join me in helping others to learn how to have their broken heart healed. Understand that the only way to truly have your broken heart is through the Lord Jesus Christ. Build a relationship with Jesus Christ, and will heal your broken heart. When your broken heart is healed, He brings hope after everything that happens to us. He promises us, “It is the Lord who goes before you. He will be with you; he will not leave you or forsake you. Do not fear or be dismayed.” Deuteronomy 31:8 (ESV) Then you will be prepared for anything which gives hope. The death of Jesus Christ on the cross satisfied the penalty for my sins and yours as well. It satisfied all my sins from the past, in the present and in the future. My penalty and yours was satisfied on the cross by the death of Jesus, God’s greatest act of love and wrath, who became sin for me and you. It was also God’s greatest act of faithfulness because “God shows his love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.” Romans 5:8 (ESV) Because wisdom shows us, we need to believe in Jesus. I hope that you join me in helping others to choose Jesus.
