Do you like being served by others? I do. Do you like to serve others? I do. Do you get more satisfaction in serving or being served? There are times when I am more satisfied in being served than serving. I wonder if that is because I have a selfish streak in me. I know however, that in the long run I am more satisfied when I am serving. How about you? Am I more satisfied in serving because it is supposed to be the way I live? I actually think that I was made to serve. It is all of God’s perfect plan for me. So, is it God’s perfect plan for everyone? Let us see.
Philippians 2:3-4 tells us, “Do nothing from selfish ambition or conceit, but in humility count others more significant than yourselves. Let each of you look not only to his own interests, but also to the interests of others.” (ESV) Paul tells me to do nothing so that I will gain praise and glory or from an attitude of I am better that you so I am doing this to prove it. Rather I am to humbly look at others as being more important than myself. I am to look out for what is best for you. I believe when I do that, I provide you with not only what you need but I give you hope that no matter the situation you are in you will have hope that things will get better because God cares and so do I.
I also see that I have a great responsibility for others. Jesus tells us in the Sermon on the Mount, “You are the light of the world. A city set on a hill cannot be hidden. Nor do people light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on a stand, and it gives light to all in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father who is in heaven.” Matthew 5:14-16 (ESV) As I live my life and do things the Light of the World, Jesus, should be shining in me. When I allow The Light of the World to shine then it is God who receives the glory and not me. But Jesus tells me that when I serve something happens to me, “The greatest among you shall be your servant.” Matthew 23:11 (ESV)
Finally, Jesus tells me that I need to be a servant just as He was. “But it shall not be so among you. But whoever would be great among you must be your servant, and whoever would be first among you must be slave of all. For even the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.” Mark 10:43-45 (ESV)
Living life as a servant brings others hope. I also believes it brings me hope because I am living the life the way that God wants me to live my life. The world would be a lot better off if only we all could live as servants to each other instead of looking out for our own self interest.
So, join me in serving other and be at peace from God. Knowing when we fail at serving, God will still be faithful and give us hope from the hands of the only One who can give you true hope. He can make all things right. As you serve receive hope for yourself and give hope to others by living in God’s faithfulness. The death of Jesus Christ on the cross satisfied the penalty for my sins and yours as well. It satisfied all my sins from the past, in the present and in the future. My penalty and yours was satisfied on the cross by the death of Jesus, God’s greatest act of love and wrath, who became sin for me and you. It was also God’s greatest act of faithfulness because “but God shows his love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.” Romans 5:8 (ESV) Because of that we ought to believe in Jesus.
