Reality Brings Hope!

Have you ever wished that your life was different? Have you ever got caught up in the idea of things would be better if only? I have. Have you ever lived trying to avoid the truth? I have. Have you ever tried to ignore a difficult situation? I have. Did it help? It did not for me. The only way that things got better was when I faced reality.

What is reality? The world defines it like this. “Reality are the things in life that are commonly observed and verified to exist, things that are consistent and not random or influenced by conformity or mass hysteria. Something that is perceived as real and is physically experienced by the senses. Reality is relative.” I am sorry but I have a real problem with reality being relative. To me reality is what is true. R. C Sproul said, “Truth is defined as that which corresponds to reality as perceived by God.” When discussing reality Os Guinness said, “Truth is fundamentally about who God is.”

What then do we know about truth in as much as total truth is what is real? The first thing is that truth comes from God. “For the law was given through Moses; grace and truth came through Jesus Christ.” (ESV) John 1:17 I also find that if I abide in His Word I will set us free. So, Jesus said to the Jews who had believed him, ‘If you abide in my word, you are truly my disciples, and you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.’” (ESV) John 8:31-32 I also find that Jesus is the only way to the father. So, reality is that I need Jesus to go to heaven. “Jesus said to him, ‘I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me. If you had known me, you would have known my Father also.[d] From now on you do know him and have seen him.’” (ESV) John 14:6-7

I also find that I need help to know what is real. My wishes and desires get in the way of understanding what is real. I cannot decide what is real and sometimes I do not understand what is real. God has also solved that problem for me. “When the Spirit of truth comes, He will guide you into all the truth, for He will not speak on his own authority, but whatever He hears He will speak, and He will declare to you the things that are to come.  He will glorify me, for He will take what is mine and declare it to you. All that the Father has is mine; therefore, I said that He will take what is mine and declare it to you.” (ESV) John 16:13-15

When I look at reality, I think that it is what is true according to God. I cannot change what is real. I can only live in the knowledge that God is in control and in that I have hope. I have hope in that He has provided me with the ability to know and understand what is real. He has also helped me to understand that there is only one reality. God’s reality is all there is for me.
