Have you ever been broken hearted? I have. How did you go about fixing it? Did you just tough it out? Did you talk it out? Did you seek professional help? Did you just live with it? Was it over a broken relationship? Was it over a child that had gone astray? No matter why you have been broken hearted, the hurt is real. We all want to seek renewal. I have good news for you. There is someone who was born to heal the broken hearted.
Psalms 147:3 it says, “He heals the brokenhearted and binds up their wounds.” (ESV) In this case the He refers to the Lord God. One of the many things God does for us is to heal our broken hearts. He also comforts the brokenhearted. King David said, “The Lord is near to the brokenhearted
and saves the crushed in spirit.” By drawing near to us God comforts our broken hearts.
How does God heal the broken hearted? The Prophet Isaiah said that He does it by dwelling with the contrite and lowly in spirit and then He revives the spirit and the heart. “For thus says the One who is high and lifted up, who inhabits eternity, whose name is Holy: “I dwell in the high and holy place, and also with him who is of a contrite and lowly spirit, to revive the spirit of the lowly, and to revive the heart of the contrite.” Isaiah 57:15 (ESV) One reason Jesus was sent to the earth was to specifically bind up the brokenhearted.“The Spirit of the Lord God is upon me, because the Lord has anointed me to bring good news to the poor;[a] he has sent me to bind up the brokenhearted, to proclaim liberty to the captives, and the opening of the prison to those who are bound;” Isaiah 61:1 (ESV)
What does it mean to bind up? It means to bandage or repair, heal, the tear in your heart that occurred when it broke. In fact, all of our hearts have been broken. They broke when we sinned for the first time and we were disconnected from God because of it. Our hearts need repair. So, God created a plan even before He created the heavens and earth, and before He made you and me. The plan He made was the perfect way to repair our broken hearts. He sent His only Son to earth as a baby, and He became a man (human,) like you and me, and suffered all the things that you and I suffer but He did not sin. Then He became our replacement on the cross where He took the sins of the world on His shoulders so that our broken hearts might be repaired by faith in Jesus’ sacrifice.
