Our All-Knowing God Brings Hope

May 27, 2020

Have you ever wondered about your future? Or, have you wanted to know what would happen if you chose to do one thing over another? I have many times. And what about the concept of God being all-knowing? Does it help me or hurt me, when God doesn’t tell me the future? Let’s look at what the Bible has to say about this to gain understanding.

The Psalmist says in Psalms 139:1-6,

O Lord, you have searched me and known me!
You know when I sit down and when I rise up;
    you discern my thoughts from afar.
You search out my path and my lying down
    and are acquainted with all my ways.
Even before a word is on my tongue,
    behold, O Lord, you know it altogether.
You hem me in, behind and before,
    and lay your hand upon me.
Such knowledge is too wonderful for me;
    it is high; I cannot attain it.
(ESV)

It is clear in this passage-God knows me inside and out. He knows what is happening in my life and yours, all the time. But, how does that help me or you? Personally, I take comfort in knowing God is there with me as I go about my life. He’s never surprised at what’s happening, in fact, He knew about it before it ever happened. Which means He is ready and able to help, comfort, encourage and strengthen me and you, in every circumstance of our lives.

God’s watchful eye is even grander than you and I can imagine. He’s watching over the whole world, seeing both good and evil. Proverbs 15:3 says,

“The eyes of the Lord are in every place,
    keeping watch on the evil and the good.”
 (ESV)

Yet, what difference does this make in the grand scheme of things? I believe it demonstrates how I can trust God to lead me and guide me in all my decisions and plans, when I seek Him as I make those choices. As I trust in the Lord, He will guide me and confirm my steps. It says in Proverbs 3:5-6,

“Trust in the Lord with all your heart,
    and do not lean on your own understanding.
In all your ways acknowledge him,
    and he will make straight your paths.”
 (ESV)

Honestly, even though I am absolutely convinced God knows all things and that He wants to guide my steps, I still fail to trust Him. A lot of the time I take control of my own life. I want to do things my way. But the times I do it God’s way, I have peace and hope for the future.

If you want to start doing it God’s way the first step is by getting to know Jesus.
