The God Who is Present Brings Hope

May 20, 2020

Have you ever been in a situation where you desperately need help? Have you ever been so tied up by fear? Have you ever wondered is there anyone who understood? Have you ever been at the end of your rope and did not know where to turn? During the many years that my wife Laura suffered from mental illness and attempted suicide multiple times I could at times answer these questions yes. However, God showed me through The Bible that He was always present and there to help, take away my fear, had a life line to extend my rope and most importantly He understood.

In Particular God spoke to me through Psalms 46:1-3.

God is our refuge and strength,
a very present help in trouble.

Therefore, we will not fear though the earth gives way,
though the mountains be moved into the heart of the sea,

though its waters roar and foam,
though the mountains tremble at its swelling. Selah

God’s answer to my dilemma was Him. God was always there for me. He was there to help me. He was there to take away my fear. Can I say that it worked all of the time? I must answer no not because God was not there but because I did not accept His help. I sought to do it on my own.

God also showed me in The Bible that He understood everything that I was going through. What a relief it was to know that even though most of my friends could not comprehend what I was going through God could. Hebrews 4:14-16 says, Since then we have a great high priest who has passed through the heavens, Jesus, the Son of God, let us hold fast our confession.  For we do not have a high priest who is unable to sympathize with our weaknesses, but one who in every respect has been tempted as we are, yet without sin.  Let us then with confidence draw near to the throne of grace, that we may receive mercy and find grace to help in time of need.” (ESV)

Since Jesus was fully man and fully God, He could understand what I was going through. He could understand my fear, my worry, my helpless feeling, and my need for help. Not only that Jesus is my intermediary between God and me. He is sitting at the right hand of God the Father interceding for me. He is pleading my case.

As I continued to struggle, doubt, fear, and wonder, Jesus was right there for me. His Holy Spirit was dwelling within me. He was helping me to pray. Even when I did not know how or what to pray the Holy Spirit did. As Romans 8:26-27 says, “Likewise the Spirit helps us in our weakness. For we do not know what to pray for as we ought, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us with groanings too deep for words. And he who searches hearts knows what is the mind of the Spirit, because the Spirit intercedes for the saints according to the will of God.”

If you do not know Jesus. If you do not have a personal relationship with Him. If the Holy Spirit is not living in you then, get to know Jesus.
